The flu virus (short for influenza virus) is a contagious respiratory virus that infects the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It causes the illness known as influenza, commonly called the flu.

The Types of Flu Viruses
There are four main types of influenza viruses:
- Influenza A
- The most common and often the most severe.
- Responsible for seasonal flu epidemics and pandemics.

- Only infects humans.
- Generally milder than type A.
- Influenza C

How the Flu Virus Infects the Body
The virus has two key surface proteins:
- Hem agglutinin (H) – allows the virus to attach to cells in the respiratory tract.
- Neuraminidase (N) – helps the virus escape infected cells and spread.
Once inside your body:
- The virus attaches to respiratory cells.
- It enters the cell and uses the cell to replicate itself.
- New viruses are released and infect nearby cells.
- The immune system reacts, producing flu symptoms.
Common Flu Symptoms
Symptoms usually appear 1–4 days after infection and may include:
- Fever
- Chills
- Body aches
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Runny or blocked nose
- Dry cough
Unlike a common cold, the flu often starts suddenly and can make you feel extremely weak.
Flu viruses mutate very quickly. This process is called antigenic drift, which means:
- The virus slightly changes every year.
- Our immune system may not fully recognise it.
- This is why new flu vaccines are developed each year.
